True Life: I Hate Running

It's the New Year. Gyms will be packed for the next 4 weeks (or less). Therefore Alumni Row's theme for the month will be fitness!

2013 will definitely be my year to get in shape. I got workout gear and shoes for Christmas. Problem? I hate running. I want so much to become a runner. So much that I want to take off running on my first day. I realize this isn't possible since I'm not used to running at all. With all my years in marching band, I am trained to walk to a beat. Therefore music will be my motivation. I love making creative playlists (with names such as raspberry lemonade, popcorn randomness, crank, and discotecas) but now my playlists will have meaning . I found a workout plan that incorporates interval running. Now I need to convert those miles per hour (mph) to beats per minute (bpm). 6 mph is 150 bpm, that's 25 bpm per mile. Therefore the workout plan in terms of bpm is:

5 minutes on 50 bpm
1 minute on 150 bpm
1 minute on 88 bpm
2 minutes on 150 bpm
1 minute on 88 bpm
3 minutes on 150 bpm
1 minute on 88 bpm
4 minutes on 150 bpm
1 minute on 88 bpm
5 minutes on 150 bpm
1 minute on 88 bpm
6 minutes on 150 bpm
1 minute on 88 bpm
7 minutes on 150 bpm
1 minute on 88 bpm
5 minutes on 50 bpm

Notice the pattern?
Look to your own music library. In mine, the best 88(ish) bpm songs are:

  • Wylin Cuz I'm Young by Kid Cudi
  • Sunday Morning by Maroon 5
  • Genie in a Bottle by Christina Aguilera
  • Forgot About Dre by Dr. Dre + Eminem
  • American Terrorist by Lupe Fiasco
  • I'm Like a Bird by Nelly Furtado
  • Hit Em Up Style by Blue Cantrell
  • Jumpin Jumpin by Destiny's Child
  • Losing My Way by Justin Timberlake

Some good 150(ish) bpm songs in my library?

  • Make it Mine by Jason Mraz
  • Harder to Breathe by Maroon 5
  • The Takeover, The Break's Over by Fall Out Boy
  • Heart Donor by Lupe Fiasco
  • A Milli by Lil Wayne
  • Go Go Gadget Flow by Lupe Fiasco
  • Already Gone by Kelly Clarkson

  1. I will definitely be downloading some of these 150 bpm songs! Also, if you get tired of making playlists... apps like jog.fm can scan your music library and play songs to the beat of your run/walk in real time.
